What are Dates?

 Phoenix dactylifera, commonly known as date palm, is a species of flowering plant in the palm family, Arecaceae, cultivated for its sweet, edible fruit. This species is widely cultivated in North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, and is native to many tropical and subtropical regions of the world. P. dactylifera is a species of the genus Phoenix, containing 12-19 species of wild dates, and is the main source of commercial production.

Total annual world date production stands at 8.5 million tons, with countries in the Middle East and North Africa being the largest producers.
